ZIR 4
A vibrant blend of living, working, and leisure
The ZIR 4 site is characterized by its dynamic yet fragmented urban context, situated near the Van Praet Bridge, the A12 motorway, residential areas, industrial zones, the Brussels canal, and green spaces. For the architectural competition, Oskar, alongside Archipelago, Drom, Officeu, Tractebel, and Avantgarden, proposed a masterplan to unify these diverse elements.
The design emphasizes a mix of urban functions—housing, education (including a nursery), cultural spaces, workshops, parking, and integrated green areas. Moving beyond traditional zoning, it fosters interaction and synergy among these functions.
Central to the plan is a strong connection to the landscape, creating public and private green spaces that encourage social interaction. The "kirigami" approach shapes the landscape with gradual transitions, blurring lines between public and private realms, enhancing interaction among residents, visitors, and the natural environment.
