Maximizing learning in minimal space: a compact design for urban growth - Passiefbouw
In one of the most densely populated areas of Brussels, a new dual primary school, after-school childcare center, and multi-functional sports facility were developed to address local needs. The neighborhood, characterized by small living spaces and a lack of quality public areas, required a compact design that maximizes outdoor space for play and community living.
The ground floor features a kindergarten village, with classrooms surrounding a central play zone, each having its own outdoor terrace. Classrooms are paired with large curtains for flexible learning. Primary school classrooms are organized in clusters of four, linked by breakout spaces, along with additional facilities such as a fab lab, media library, teaching kitchen, and sports hall.
To meet a tight deadline, the building utilized a prefabricated structure of concrete columns and beams, complemented by a facade of wooden cassettes and metal cladding, enhancing both efficiency and aesthetics.
