PORTA 1070
Belgium's first Teen School
PORTA 1070 is located along the Ninoofsesteenweg in a densely populated - almost chaotic - part of Anderlecht. The narrow site, with a significant height difference, lies between an old warehouse and the iconic Scheutkerk and connects two very different parts of the city.
The church was thoroughly renovated and restored and subsequently repurposed as a sports hall for the neighborhood and school. An efficient new building nestles itself in a U-shape around the church and provides the much-needed educational capacity for the 600 students who will find their place here. With PORTA 1070, the first Teen School in Belgium was realized; the classic corridors and classrooms make way for ambitious learning landscapes with this innovative learning concept, where students take authorship of their own learning journey.
The landscapes are designed and materialized to define different atmospheres and zones in a soft way so that the students can always find a suitable place for their current educational needs, individually or in a group. The circulation and outdoor spaces are also designed as full-fledged pedagogical learning and discovery zones.
