Sint Michielsschool
Below the ground and above the trees
St. Michael's School needed to expand and acquired the neighboring plot. On this limited site, we have maximized every square meter, partially locating the sports hall underground. On the ground floor, we created a multi-functional space that now serves as the central hub of both the existing and the new school. Its strategic location makes it easily accessible for a wide range of users.
Expanding the school and significantly increasing its capacity within the limited available space presented a significant challenge for this project. We addressed this by creating a smart, compact new building that also made functional use of underground levels. The design of the outdoor space was equally challenging. We transformed the existing playground into a 'double-decker' concept, featuring a uniquely shaped canopy that provides abundant natural light. A large tree, planted at the center of the platform, serves as the playground's focal point.
