Bijgaardenhof
Revitalizing an industrial area to create a thriving village
A former industrial site in Groot-Bijgaarden is being transformed into a vibrant collective housing project, featuring 102 residential units, four service spaces, a community room, and various green outdoor areas. The challenge was to connect the site to the existing village fabric, achieved through a network of car-free streets, squares, and pathways that promote interaction among residents.
The design incorporates cozy outdoor spaces defined by the building volumes, fostering encounters between residents and visitors. The architecture uses warm, natural materials, with iconic buildings at the edges serving as landmarks that invite walking and cycling. This small-scale approach creates charming meeting places, making Bijgaardenhof a community-centric environment for living, working, and socializing. At its center, a community space acts as a catalyst for engagement, enhancing the sense of neighborhood and facilitating a communal lifestyle.
